WP League Report round 8 by Candidate Master Lyndon Bouah

The WP league is reaching its climax with only three rounds to go. Steinitz are narrowly leading by a half a point. Steinitz beat Uitsig 5-0 while Cape Town lost 4-5 to 0.5 to Stellenbosch.  Stellenbosch has now also recruited Stefan Wagner to play for them. This has meant that Professor Sarel Steel was making his debut in the B division after many a season.

Premier Division.

A quick round up of the Premier Division reveals the following :

Claremont  beat Bellville B 4 -1. Claremont is struggling a bit this year with a number of their players playing for other clubs.

Goodwood beat Steinitz B 4-1 as well with only Athon Willenberg managing a point on top board against WP Closed Champion Jason Davies.

Steinitz A played without its top three boards but still managed to beat Uitsig 5-0.

IM David Gluckman held fellow IM Kenny Solomon to a hard fought draw in a top rated clash. The spectators were intensely watching as Gluckman has a queen against Solomon’s two rooks.

Belhar Knights showed they meant business when they beat Manyanani 3/5 to 1/5. Donovan van Den Heever gave his teammates a fright when he had to make 15 moves in ten minutes against Maxwell Solomon. He managed to make the time control and claim the victory. The leading teams are Steinitz on 32.5, Stellenbosch on 32 and Goodwood on 27.

B Division.

In the B division Athlone recorded a good win by beating Bellville D 3.5 to 1.5

Capablanca continues to show good form when they beat Cape Town B 3.5 to 1.5

Blackjacks A must have a fright of sorts when they saw Stellenbosch B. Professor Steel beat Micheal James while Jamie Geduld beat C. Cruywagen which represented a good victory for him. Blackjacks won 3-2.

UWC A continues to impress with a 4-1 victory against Bellville C.

Manyanani and Steinitz C drew 2.5 to 2.5

The leading scores in the B division continues to be Belhar Knights on 35.5 with Blackjacks in second place with 29 points.
