WP League Report Round five by  -  Candidate Master Lyndon Bouah

  

WP league report of Super Saturday  - 9 August 2008

Round five started on national Women’s day at 10am. Players of course drifted in as the early morning start proved to be a difficult one for some.

Premier Section :

Steinitz A started the morning off briskly when the defeated Cape Town A 5-0. Deon Solomons played a superb game against IM David Gluckman. A flashy attack ensured the point on the top board. The rest of the Steinitz team nursed early advantages home to secure a lead.

Stellenbosch in the meantime was not having it any easier against Bellville. Francios Van Niekerk played well against Dole but couldn’t hold the draw. Leon Smit defeated Cruywagen on board four though to secure a point for Bellville.

WIM Ellappen beat the WP Closed Co-Champion Jason Davies in a good result for her and UCT. They drew 2.5/2.5

Uitsig showed they meant business when they defeated Claremont 3-2. Shaun Brown recorded a good victory against Bryan Aguirre.

Belhar Knights beat Bellville B 3.5-1.5 in a  solid encounter where stalwarts Van Den Heever and Fredericks pulled out the stops.

Manyanani easily defeated Steinitz B 4-1.

The die was now cast for round 6.

B section

Blackjacks got their show on the road when they beat Cape Town B 5-0.

Bellville C beat Steinitz C 5-0 in a rather one sided encounter.

Capablanca proved to strong for UWC and defeated them 4-1.

Athlone beat Blackjacks 3-2 in a tough encounter.

Belhar knights continued their good run of form with a 3.5 -1.5 win against Manyanani.

Bellville D beat Stellenbosch 3.5 to 1.5

C section

CPUT drew with UWC B 2.5-2.5.

UCT secured some valuable points when they won 4-1.

Wesbank  beat Manyanani 3-2 in a close encounter.

Goodwood C beat Blackjacks 3-2.

Goodwwod B continued their impressive showing when they won 5-0 against Pollsmoor.

The scene was now set for Round Six.

I will do a report later this week on round 6.

Stellenbosch however drew blood against Steinitz when they defeated Steinitz 3-2.

Stellenbosch decided to ensure a fully strengthened when they recruited IM Kenny Solomon for board one.

The individual results of that match was the following:

  1. K. Solomon            0.5/0.5     D. Solomons
  2. H. Steel                   0.5/0.5    L. Bouah
  3. K. Van Zyl Smit      1-0          C Willenberg
  4. A. Dole                   1-0          K. Willenberg
  5. H. Weideman          0- 1         R. Solomons

The league is now down to the wire with Steinitz leading by a point despite the loss.
